Insulin Pump Failure Management
Save your pump settings regularly:
- Tandem: tconnect.tandemdiabetes.com
- Go to Settings, click My Devices, click View Settings, click Save Report
- Omnipod: my.glooko.com
- Go to Create PDF report, click Devices, click Create PDF
- Medtronic: carelink.minimed.com
- Go to Reports, click Device Settings, click Generate Reports
Without insulin, you may develop diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and need hospitalization.
If your pump is not working, you should:
- Immediately inject *** units of basal insulin
Such as Lantus, Basaglar, Semglee, Toujeo, Levemir or Tresiba
Inject basal (background) insulin once every 24 hours until restarting the pump. The number of units will equal your total amount of daily basal insulin. If you are unsure of this amount, check with your diabetes doctor or educator. - Inject rapid acting insulin before eating
Such as Novolog, Humalog, Fiasp, Apidra, Admelog or Lyumjev- Step 1: Calculate correction dose (in units) = (Blood sugar - 120) / Correction factor
- Step 2: Calculate carbohydrate coverage dose (in units) = Total grams of carbs in food / Carb ratio
- Step 3: Add Step 1 and Step 2 to calculate total bolus dose
- Call pump company to request replacement pump

- Restart the pump 24 hours after the last basal injection.
- Program the new pump with your saved settings, call the pump company for technical support.
- Check blood glucose 2 hours after resuming pump therapy to ensure correct site placement.
- Schedule an appointment with your diabetes educator as needed.
