What is prune belly syndrome?
Prune belly syndrome (PBS) is a rare disorder in males associated with a wrinkled abdominal wall due to insufficient abdominal muscles, testes in the abdomen, and abnormalities of the urinary tract. Low amniotic fluid can also be present and lead to poor lung development.
What is the treatment for prune belly syndrome?
Since many other abnormalities are associated with PBS, children with this condition must be cared for in a major pediatric center with specialists from anesthesiology, cardiology, neonatology/ICU, pediatric nephrology, pediatric urology, and pulmonology. Our team assesses heart, lung, and bone abnormalities in addition to urologic problems and tailor treatment to the severity of each child's abnormalities and kidney function. Our surgeons perform corrective procedures to bring the testes into the scrotum, correct ureteral reflux, and reconstruct the abdominal wall—none of which need to be done immediately after birth.
