What is ureterovesical junction obstruction?
Children with a blockage where the ureter enters the bladder have a ureterovesical junction obstruction.
How is ureterovesical junction obstruction diagnosed?
A child may be evaluated for this condition with the following tests:
- Renal bladder ultrasound uses sound waves to view outline the kidneys and bladder.
- MAG III renal scan determines how each kidney is functioning and the degree of blockage.
- MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is a diagnostic procedure that uses a combination of a large magnet, radiofrequencies, and a computer to produce detailed images of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder.
What is the treatment for ureterovesical junction obstruction?
While some cases of ureterovesical junction obstruction improve on their own over time, others need to be corrected. Our surgical team can remove the obstructed segment of the affected ureter and taper the remaining part of the ureter so it fits properly into the bladder.
