Pediatric Allergy Program

The Pediatric Allergy Program, affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, provides coordinated care for young patients who have airborne, environmental, and food allergies; urticaria (hives); atopic dermatitis; difficult to define allergic disease, and more.

Living with allergies can be challenging. We take a family-centered approach to treating allergies in children, providing our young patients and their caregivers with the education and tools they need to be active participants in their care.

Our team includes specialists with wide variety of backgrounds and areas of focus, including the advanced diagnosis and treatment of children and adolescents with symptoms of more complex conditions such as eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES), and severe atopic dermatitis, or eczema. We work closely with wide range of specialists to provide coordinated care for our more complex patients.

Our goal for all our patients is to help them live active, productive lives.

Expert Diagnosis of Childhood Allergies

Whether your child has symptoms of multiple food or environmental allergies, is at risk of a life-threatening allergic reaction, or is experiencing growth issues related to allergies, our pediatric allergists will work with you to identify the cause of the symptoms and find the right treatment for your child.

We will start with a full medical history and exam, followed by a series of tests. Depending on your child’s symptoms, these may include blood tests or skin tests to pinpoint the exact cause of your child’s allergies. Our child life specialists are available to help your child through the process.

We consult and work closely with a wide range of specialists in gastroenterology, pulmonology, hepatology, dermatology, and genetics. Together, we will pinpoint the cause of your child’s allergies and create the right team for your treatment.

Treatment at Columbia

Treatment for allergies usually involves avoidance of the food or other allergen causing the reaction. This can be challenging, especially for younger patients. We are dedicated to helping our patients and their families navigate the emotional and physical adjustments that are required when living with allergies. This is also true for when allergens cannot be identified, or the symptoms are due to allergic inflammation not triggered by the environment.

We believe that a close partnership with our patients and their families is the key to effective treatment for allergies, and we are dedicated to both the education and the treatment necessary to help your child live an active, productive life.

Medication may also be part of your child’s treatment plan. We offer the most current medications, which may include antihistamines, immunotherapy (allergy shots), an epinephrine autoinjector (epi pen), and newer targeted biologic therapy.

Our specialized programs provide coordinated care for all children, including the most complex cases:
