What Is Lymphoma?

Lymphoma is cancer that begins in the lymphatic system—affecting immune cells in the lymph nodes, thymus gland, spleen, and bone marrow. These cells, called lymphocytes, begin reproducing rapidly. Eventually, they pervade the organs of the lymphatic system, impeding the development of healthy cells and causing inflammation.

Lymphoma is the third most common cancer in children, after leukemia and brain tumors. There are two main forms of childhood lymphoma: Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is more common in young children, while Hodgkin lymphoma occurs more often in adolescents.
