A chronic cough can be more than a nuisance and indicate a medical disorder that could benefit from treatment. These include allergies, postnasal drip, asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and drug reactions. Depending on your medical history and physical exam, a pediatric pulmonologist can help you determine the cause and appropriate treatment.
What causes a chronic cough?
Chronic coughs can be caused by a wide range of conditions, such as allergies, postnasal drip, asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and drug reactions.
What is the treatment for chronic cough?
Proper treatment of chronic cough depends on the proper diagnosis. Our pediatric pulmonologists will work with you to diagnose and find the right treatment for your child's chronic cough. Your treatment plan might include treatment of allergies that are causing it, through identification and avoidance of environmental triggers; antihistamines; or treatment of postnasal drip through use of intranasal steroids. If the cause is determined to be gastroesophageal reflux, we may rely on adjusting some eating habits (egs. avoiding spicy foods, caffeine) and taking prescription and nonprescription medicines.
